The Research Experience for High School Students program selects highly motivated high-school students who are interested in gaining valuable cutting-edge research experience in Data Science or AI. Driven students shall have the opportunity to publish a research paper based on the research project.

Interested students should fill out this Sign-up Form.

We will schedule a meeting for the student with the professor after the professor has reviewed the applicant’s credentials. The student and professor shall together decide on the appropriate research path.

The program starts in September 2022. The program schedule and options are described below.

Phase I (Python Fundamentals): five 1.5-hour meetings online live via Zoom.

learning python language

  1. Installation and utilization of python platform
  2. Basic grammar of python language
  3. The loop of the computation
  4. How to define a function
  5. How to read files

Phase II (Hands-on Activities in Data Analysis and AI): five 1.5-hour meetings online live via Zoom.

There are two options for students to choose from.

Option I: Data Analysis

  1. How to use database, which is to store and read the data.
  2. Preprocessing of data, which is used to select correct data from the applications.
  3. Correlation analysis, which is used to find the related objects and things.
  4. Probability and statistical analysis, which is used to find the value of data.
  5. The application of data analysis, which includes emotion analysis in online shopping.

Option II: Artificial Intelligence

  1. The basic knowledge of artificial intelligence
  2. Decision tree algorithm, which helps you make a good decision
  3. KNN(K-nearest neighbor algorithm), which is to automatically distinguish objects
  4. BP(back propagation) neural network, which is to classify objects.
  5. The application of deep learning, which includes the state of art AI applications.

Phase III (Research Experience): working with a designated professor and research team on a state-of-the-are research project, six months on average.

     There are two directions:

  1. Data analysis projects, big data applications
  2. AI (artificial intelligence) algorithms, the design of AI accelerates

In Phase III, the student will be part of the research team and regularly communicate with the professor and other members of the team. It includes

  1. Communication with the team on research questions and progress via email or some communication app.
  2. Voice/video meetings, once every one or two weeks.
  3. Organized presentations, once a month.

The research team shall help maximize the student’s research involvement and earn the highest achievement possible. The student and professor shall work together

  1. Basic level: join our project and know the whole content
  2. Advanced level: play important role like finishing assigned tasks.
  3. Expert level: can be the leader of your own project, we will support any good idea.

Goals:

  1. Students will gain knowledge and enhanced ability to solve problems in Data Science or AI.
  2. Students will obtain unique experience on conducting a research project with real-life application.
  3. Students will regularly practice on presenting research to others logically.
  4. Motivated students shall have the opportunity to publish a research paper in internationally recognized journals/conference proceedings based on the research project.

Leading Professors:

GUANGHAO JIN is a professor in Beijing Polytechnic University. He received his Ph.D in Mathematics and Computing Science from Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research centers around artificial intelligence and related fields, he has published 25 papers in domestic and foreign journals and conferences.

QINGZENG SONG is a professor in School of Computer Science &Technology, Tianjin Polytechnic University, China. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Hebei University of Technology. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence; Embedded systems; IC Design. In related fields, he has published 30 papers in domestic and foreign journals and conferences.

Program Options:

A leading professor will interview each participant. There are two options for each student based on her/his academic credentials.

  1. For students who will go through Phase I – Phase III, the first payment is $2,000 for Phase I and Phase II. The professor and the student will evaluate the student’s progress at the end of Phase II. With satisfactory progress, the student can choose to continue to participate in Phase III, for which the second payment is $2,000. ($4,000 in total)
  2. For highly qualified students, it is possible for an immediate participate in Phase III (with the professor’s permission). The one-time payment for the program is $3,000.

This is the registration for the first part of Option 1: Phase I and Phase II ($2,000). Click the top-right button on this page to complete registration.
