Scope:
The course curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Mathematics State Standards that have been adopted by the State of Michigan together with other forty states in the US for high-quality Grades 6-12 math education.

Objective:
Algebra 1 is a rigorous first-year algebra course. This course covers the same (or more) topics as the Algebra 1 Honors course offered in some middle schools for 8th graders who learn at an accelerated pace, or as the Algebra 1 course offered in high schools for 9th graders. Algebra 1 is a one-year course (Algebra 1 A  in the fall semester and Algebra 1 B in the spring semester). Algebra 1 A covers the first-semester content of the course.

For current 7th graders or below, this course can prepare testing out middle/high school math courses and future math contests. For current 8th graders or above, this course can enhance math learning at the grade level for state standard tests and subsequent STEM courses.

In this course, students will: (1) develop fluency in writing, interpreting, and translating between various forms of linear equations and inequalities, and use them to solve problems and apply related solution techniques; (2) explore many examples of functions, including sequences; students interpret functions given graphically, numerically, symbolically, and verbally, translate between representations, and understand the limitations of various representations; (3) use regression techniques to describe approximately linear relationships between quantities; (4) create and solve equations, inequalities, and systems of equations involving exponential , quadratic , and rational expressions; (5) expand their experience with functions to include more specialized functions—absolute value, step, and those that are piecewise-defined.

Prerequisite:
This course is suitable for students who have mastered the middle school prealgebra series (equivalent to Prealgebra 1 and Prealgebra 2, or Prealgebra Math Contest at Megrez). This group often includes students who are in grade 6, 7, 8, or 9 in fall 2022.

Textbook:
This course covers topics in the textbook in two semesters. We will email you the textbook info when sufficient enrollment is reached.

Schedule:
Class will meet once a week on each Saturday 7 pm-8:30 pm ET from 09/03/2022 to 12/17/2022 (except for the Thanksgiving week, 15 meetings in total): 09/03, 09/10, 09/17, 09/24, 10/01, 10/08, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/05, 11/12, 11/19, 12/03, 12/10, 12/17/2022. Tentatively weekly quizzes plus simulated tests in the fall semester.
