Objective: This course covers most of the topics that are taught in the regular middle school Algebra 1 course in grade 8 or 9, and aims to challenge students for deep understanding of math concepts. Many homework problems are real problems from math contests, such as MathCounts, MOEMS, and AMC 8. It is ideal for students who are looking for challenging math problems and/or systematically preparing middle/high school math contests. It also helps students prepare middle school math course test-out. Algebra 1 Math Contest A prepares students for other advanced topics in middle school math contests, such as counting & probability, geometry, and number theory.

In the fall semester, the course covers exponents and radicals, linear equations and inequalities, ratio and proportion, systems of linear equations, quadratics, and complex numbers.

Prerequisite: This course is suitable for driven students who have mastered the prealgebra courses (equivalent to Prealgebra 1 and Prealgebra 2 or Prealgebra Math Contest at Megrez). This group often includes students who are in grade 5, 6, 7, or 8 in fall 2022. Given the depth and breadth of the topics covered in this course, it can be very helpful developing problem solving and critical thinking skills even for students who have learned  Algebra 1 in the middle/high school. Motivated students who are interested in challenging math problems can use this course to prepare testing out middle/high school math courses and systematically prepare for future middle school math contests.

Textbook: The Art of Problem Solving – Introduction to Algebra (2nd edition), 2019. Author: Richard Rusczyk. Algebra 1 Math Contest A covers topics in the first half of the textbook. WE WILL NOTIFY YOU WHEN SUFFICIENT ENROLLMENT IS REACHED. YOU CAN PLACE THE BOOK ORDER UPON THE NOTIFICATION.
