Scope:
The course curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Mathematics State Standards that have been adopted by the State of Michigan together with other forty states in the US for high-quality Grades 6-12 math education.

Objective:
Students will learn one and half years of middle school mathematics (usually covered in the second half year of grade 7 and in grade 8) in one year. This course covers the same (or more) topics as the Math 7/8 Honors course that is offered in some middle schools for 7th graders who learn at an accelerated pace. Prealgebra 2 is a one-year course (Prealgebra 2 A  in the fall semester and Prealgebra 2 B in the spring semester). Prealgebra 2 B covers the second-semester content of the course.

For current elementary school students, this course can prepare testing out middle school math courses and future middle school math contests. For current middle school students, this course can enhance math learning at the grade level for state standard tests and subsequent STEM courses.

The course develops a deep conceptual and procedural understanding of mathematics. The critical areas are: (1) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with 2D and 3D shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (2) drawing inferences about populations based on samples; (3) formulating and reasoning about algebraic expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (4) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (5) analyzing 2D and 3D space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

Prerequisite:
This course is suitable for students who have mastered the middle school math at the 6th grade level. This group often includes students who are in grades 5, 6, 7, or 8 in spring 2022.

Textbook:
This course covers topics in the textbook in two semesters. We will email you the textbook info when sufficient enrollment is reached.

Schedule:
Class will meet once a week on each Wednesday 7 pm-8:30 pm ET from 01/05/2022 to 04/27/2021 (16 class meetings): 01/05, 01/12, 01/19, 01/26, 02/02, 02/09, 02/16, 02/23, 03/02, 03/09, 03/16, 03/23, 04/06, 04/13, 04/20/, 04/27/2022. Tentatively weekly quizzes plus simulated tests in the spring semester.

Small class for maximized individual attention: 5-10 students
