Megrez Education is pleased to announce that we are now cooperating with AAMATH to offer “Introduction to Counting and Probability”, a short (six-week) special topic course that enhances students’ problem solving skills in counting and  prepares students for middle school math competitions such as AMC8 and Mathcounts.

Description: Introduces basic principles and skills of combinatorics. Topics include the Fundamental Counting Principle, the Principle of Inclusion and Exclusion, permutations, and combinations. Students will learn various basic and intermediate counting skills. Prepares students for middle school math competitions such as AMC8 and Mathcounts.

It covers topics that include first principle of counting, include or exclude, principle of inclusion and exclusion (PIE)/Venn Diagram, counting terms in an arithmetic sequence, ceiling and flooring functions and count multiples, bowling pin pattern/triangular numbers, fundamental counting principle (multiplication rule), constructive counting, factorial (everybody lines up), dealing with restrictions, dealing with repetition, complementary counting, permutations and combinations, committee problems, letter arrangement problems, pascal triangle, path problems and binomial expansion, circular counting, sticks and stones.

Prerequisite: This short course is suitable for students who have mastered the middle school prealgebra series (equivalent to Prealgebra 1 and Prealgebra 2, or Prealgebra Math Contest at Megrez) and who would like to improve problem solving skills. This group often includes students who are in grades 5 – 7 in fall 2021.
